Episode 3 - Fancy a quick game?

I have cheered up.  I am enjoying some excellent roleplaying in a game of Pathfinder at the club and some good computer gaming with Slitherine's excellent new release Battlefield Academy.  I am also really looking forward to Slitherine's next release, Commander the Great War.  Commander Europe at war was brilliant.  Several days spent without lifting my head from the computer. http://www.slitherine.com/

This is just an aside though as what I really want to talk about in this episode is my seemingly endless quest for a game that plays quickly. My game of choice is Field of Glory which takes at least 3 and a half hours, unless someone beats me sooner.  So when I get a chance I play it.  I enjoy roleplaying as a lighter diversion and it fits into any available time slot.  What I have been looking for in the last couple of years though is something I have started to call a "throw down game".  Even though I have been looking for several years without success I have only defined what it is I am looking for in the last few months.

Be Afraid. Be Very Afraid

YellowCon_LogoYellowCon 2010 opens its door tomorrow at Stormont Hotel in Belfast. There will be tons of gaming related goodness to be had including Call of Cthulhu, and Vampire roleplaying games and Secrets of the Third Reich and Firestorm Armada tabletop games. There will also be a Warhammer 40000 competition event on Sunday.

This event is fully supported by Tabletopnorth and many of the games at the event will be run by our own members. I really think this convention has the potential to be the largest gaming convention in Ireland so come and support something new and innovative.

A Year in Gaming

In this article I’d like to look at how I got sucked into the gaming hobby and some hurdles encountered.

First I’ll give a little background on myself and why my particular game of choice is Game Workshop's Warhammer 40,000. Back in the swirling mist of adolescence I was a huge comic book fan. Mainly the Marvel flavour of superhero daring do but also had day trips into smaller comic companies. I’m a huge movie buff (regularly scoring full marks in most film based rounds of pub quizzes) and I love strategy video games. Of these three, comics, movies and video games, there is one underlying theme that has be strongly evident: Science Fiction.

I could go into why I like Sci-Fi so much but that would be for an entirely different article, would take up quite a lot of space and trigger discussions on religious and philosophical leanings which could cause a hole in the fabric of reality. So let’s just say in the simplest terms that: I like Sci-Fi because if something isn’t possible they’ll make something up to make it possible. (Nano-bots stole my baby…)

You could also argue that this is also true of the Fantasy genre (Kobolds stole my baby…). I do enjoy the fantasy side of things. My heavy laden bookshelves are a testament to that, coupled with the many hours ploughing through such PC gaming classics as Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights. I, however, just prefer Sci-Fi.

So why did I choose Warhammmer 40,000? Why, after many years of dodging miniatures and staring through the GW shop window, did I break and buy my first miniature to be painted and displayed?

New Venue arrangements from 30th August

Just a note to let everyone know about a slight change in our regular room booking arrangements in the Boatclub. Due to a new monthly event to be held at the Boatclub we will be making use of the upstairs restaurant on the last Monday of each month. This may turn out to be a temporary arrangement, however the Boatclub will be making additional lighting available in the restaurant to make the room more suitable for our use.

I do not foresee this change having a large impact on the club however I would respectfully ask members, and particularly the war-gamers to be aware of the limited amount of space available in the restaurant and to set up as close together as is comfortable. I will be monitoring our space requirements and will attempt to book additional space should we require it.

This arrangement will commence from Monday 30th August 2010 and will continue until further notice

Please comment upon this announcement in this forum thread.

Episode 2 - Grumpier than ever.

I am having a lover's tiff with my favourite rules set, Field of Glory. It is putting me in a bad mood. I finished last in the competition at QCON but it was not my placing that annoyed me so much as the lack of enjoyment I got from the games. The competition was themed which is generally a good thing for FOG competitions but I felt the theme of this competition with two compulsory battle groups of knights was too stringent. In FOG knights are only an option in the medieval period and medieval games are usually fun.  As in any points based rules system some units are favoured over others. I am rapidly reaching the conclusion knights are almost useless. In the competition no army was fielded with more than the minimum compulsory number of knights and I think this says a lot about their competitiveness.
